— Online distance education created a global higher learning community

ARLINGTON, VA, USA, April 29, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — The University of Management and Technology (UMT) holds its annual commencement in Rosslyn, VA. On 24 July, UMT held its 2016 Commencement at the Artisphere. There are 1,132 graduates in the class of 2016. The great majority are working professionals.

Since 1998 when UMT began to offer degree programs, it has built a strong global learning community through its online and distance education. Geographical boundaries do not limit UMT and its students. In the past 18 years, UMT has provided various levels of education programs to 24,480 students, who reside in 50 states, the District of Columbia, 4 US territories in the United States, and in 78 countries worldwide. More than 12,800 have earned their degrees from UMT.

Back in the old days, getting a college degree entailed shipping a trunk full of goodies to your college of choice the week before your Freshman year began, then sticking it out at the college for four years. Anyone who took longer than four years to complete a degree was viewed as some kind of weak-minded plodder. Today, students who make it through college in four years are a minority. A recent Department of Education fact sheet indicates that only 23.4% of students who enter a four year college actually graduate from that college within four years.

This is the new reality that the University of Management and Technology addresses in its degree programs. Most of its students are adults who have been working toward their degrees in bits and pieces as they earn a living, serve in the military, start a family, and squeeze in time to write term papers and prepare for exams. Many have attended several schools before settling down at UMT. Over the years they have accumulated quite a lot of transfer credit, so by the time they come to us, they are in a position to earn a degree in a year or two. UMT accepts up to 75% transfer credit for their undergrad degree programs.

Today's alternative students are looking to get a degree to help them move forward in their careers. What's interesting about them is that many have already developed valuable skills that make them employable and give them a toe-hold in a life career. Their principal goal in getting the degree is partially to pick up a few more skills; but chiefly, it's to get a degree that validates the expertise they have been developing over the past few years. For example, students who serve in the military are drawn to UMT’s undergraduate criminal justice or homeland security programs. They are comfortable doing police and security work, because they have experience in these areas through their military service. Another example: adult students who honed technical skills in business or in the military see a track management by enrolling in BS in Engineering Management degree. They are qualified to manage engineering work efforts thanks to the advanced technical skills they have acquired at work or in the military, coupled with the engineering management knowledge they have gained through the University of Management and Technology BS in Engineering Management.

Because UMT online courses allows students to self-paced, highly motivated students can complete their programs faster than at traditional semester-driven schools. If through hard work a student can complete a course in six weeks, then let him finish it and move on to the next course. The workload for self-paced courses is the same whether a student completes the course in six or a dozen weeks. Everyone must carry out the same load of work. But those who work harder, get through faster.

The University of Management and Technology's academic counseling service enables students to customize their programs to address their specific desires, skills and achievements. Whenever students enroll in the programs of the University of Management and Technology, they are assigned a counselor who provides them an Individual Learning Plan that meets their best interests. No two students have the identical learning plan, because each plan is tweaked to account for the student's past learning as well as current learning interests.

The option of heading off to a residential college program at a four year school is not real one for the great majority of adult, working students today. These students are looking for an affordable school that accepts the coursework they have completed and applies it to a degree; enables them to work flexibly toward the degree; and provides counseling that lets them put together a program that will serve them best in pursuing their careers. The University of Management and Technology serves them well in meeting these needs.

May is Myositis Awareness Month. Myositis Support and Understanding commemorates the month with patient-centered events

MSU Talking points for our Zebra Spots campaign

Myositis Support and Understanding Association logo

Myositis Support and Understanding Association, Inc.

Our theme, "With Myositis, Sometimes Zebras Have Spots" refers to the multitude of ways patients lives are affected in every aspect by Inflammatory Myopathies

Myositis is such a difficult and complicated disease that goes beyond just muscle and skin. Living with this disease is difficult and affects every aspect of the patient's life. We are here to help.”

— Jerry Williams, President

LINCOLN, DELAWARE, USA, April 28, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — Myositis Support and Understanding Association, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, commemorates Myositis Awareness month with our 2017 Theme, “With Myositis, Sometimes Zebras have Spots.”

The zebra is the well-recognized symbol of rare diseases. Myositis, a rare disease without a cure, is often hard to diagnose, taking years for a proper diagnosis, and even more difficult to treat, due to differences in disease markers, overlap symptoms, side effects from medications, etc. MSU has decided to use 2017’s May month of awareness to teach about how the experiences and symptoms of this rare disease are different, even among the patients with the same disease. Doctors are now starting to be trained when you hear hoof beats, look for zebras (rarities), instead of horses (common ailments), when in the past, they only looked for horses (the most common ailments). Through our public education and support of our members, plus our financial assistance program, MSU helps patients deal with the spots of the zebra called Myositis.

Myositis is a term that literally means inflammation of the muscles. The focus of MSU is on the Idiopathic Inflammatory Myopathies of which there are several types, and are all classified as rare diseases. Myositis does not only affect the muscles and skin. It is a systemic disease and can affect many different organ systems.

Polymyositis causes muscle weakness around the middle of the body and affects both sides of the body. Dermatomyositis can cause the same muscle weakness, while for some the muscle weakness never presents. This is referred to as Amyopathic Dermatomyositis. DM also causes skin rashes, however, for darker skinned people, especially of African descent, these rashes can be difficult to see thus leading to a longer period of getting a proper diagnosis. Juvenile Dermatomyositis differs from the adult form because of the coexistence of Vasculitis (inflammation of blood vessels). Inclusion body myositis mainly affects older individuals and as muscle weakness becomes severe, it is accompanied by muscle wasting and diminished deep-tendon reflexes. Unlike Polymyositis and Dermatomyositis, the muscle weakness is often asymmetric and may be prominent in the smaller muscles of the forearms and calves.

No matter which form of Myositis patients may have, getting a proper diagnosis is often years in the making. And, there are multiple potential complications and many patients become disabled due to the weakness and other factors. Education of patients so they can advocate for themselves is key. MSU is here to help.

To raise awareness of this complicated, rare disease, MSU has scheduled many activities to promote awareness and to educate.

• “Sometimes Zebras have Spots” T-shirt Campaign and Talking sheet. We have had our best T-Shirt campaign yet, selling shirts with our awareness theme, a spotted zebra, which will be accompanied by an information sheet giving members talking points about the “spots” of myositis.

• #PutaFacetoMyositis – We’ve invited members to share their own “Spot” stories of a difficult diagnosis, rarity, adaptation, they have made, or side effect of medication to be placed on an interactive Zebra graphic on our website.

• Strategic Plan Survey – MSU is committed to making its actions be a better and better reflection of its members. As such, we are asking our members to speak up and share their voice by participating in our strategic planning by filling out an important survey about our services and platforms, as well as where they would like to see us go in the future. This will further help us #PutaFacetoMyositis and make sure we have accounted for all the “Spots” of myositis.

• Video Chats – We have scheduled interactive video chats to entertain, build community, educ8, and advo8 for ourselves. And, we are in the final stages of planning an “Exercise and Myositis” video chat session with one of our medical committee advisors, Dr. Tao Chung.

• Social Media Outreach – As always we want to increase awareness of myositis so we have again enlisted the Thunderclap tool. This helps us to multiply our reach exponentially. We ask that our members, and their friends and family members, add their social strength by joining the campaign. The campaign link will be available on our Facebook page and website.

• Educational Outreach – The President of MSU, Jerry Williams, has been invited to speak about MSU and Myositis at Idera Pharmaceuticals Pennsylvania location on May 25th. Jerry will speak about his experience in living with Polymyositis, discuss the other forms of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (myositis) such as Dermatomyositis, Inclusion Body Myositis, and the Juvenile forms of Myositis, in an effort to educate and promote awareness to the employees of Idera. Heather Spadaccini, a friend and often care partner for Jerry, will speak about how frightening this disease can be and some of the complications she has witnessed along the way. As this disease affects everyone around us, hearing from a friend and care partner helps others to better understand this disease. MSU collaborated with Idera on their clinical trial that is still recruiting for the experimental drug IMO-8400 for adults with Dermatomyositis.

• Fundraising – MSU operates an all-volunteer board and staff, but our programs cost money. We run three major Facebook support groups boasting over 2000 members, we have an interactive membership website full of resources and ways to connect, we offer regular video chats, we have a financial assistance program that provides funds to myositis patients in need of financial help for medical expenses, medical travel, and household expenses, and we continue to listen to our constituents to build new programs where needed. To ensure we continue to have available funds to continue our important work we ask that you consider donating at least $25 during the month of May or even setting up a recurring donation on a monthly or yearly basis. Support our mission and our work by making your contribution at UnderstandingMyositis.org/donate

For announcements during Myositis Awareness Month and all year long, please visit our Facebook page at FB.me/UnderstandingMyositis and our website, UnderstandingMyositis.org, where you will an abundance of information.

Ayurvedic and Integrative Medicine Expert Dr. Nancy Lonsdorf to be Featured on CUTV News Radio

Dr. Nancy Lonsdorf joins CUTV News Radio to offer real solutions to our health care challenges beyond who and how we pay for it.

They call what I do ‘alternative medicine,’ but I prefer to think of it as ‘integrative.’”

— Dr. Nancy Lonsdorf

FAIRFIELD, IOWA, UNITED STATES, April 28, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — For decades, conventional and alternative medicine have been at odds, but Dr. Lonsdorf has found a way to seamlessly balance the disciplines.

“They call what I do ‘alternative medicine,’ but I prefer to think of it as ‘integrative,’” says Dr. Lonsdorf. “My patients seek me out for a solution without a lot of side effects, and they feel confident entrusting me with their health since I’m also trained in western medicine.”

Trained at both John Hopkins and Stanford, Dr. Lonsdorf is the former medical director of the Ayurveda Medical Center of Washington DC, where she served a wide spectrum of patients, including government officials and prominent leaders committed to feeling and looking their best, without drugs and their side-effects.

According to Dr. Lonsdorf, to solve our healthcare crisis, we need a totally new approach that puts healing the patient in the forefront. A pioneering integrative physician, Dr. Lonsdorf walks her talk, and has offered a personalized approach to creating real health from within using Ayurveda, the traditional health knowledge of India, since 1986.

“When we’re healthy, all parts of the body work together in harmony,” explains Dr. Lonsdorf. “Conventionally, doctors treat symptoms by trying to suppress them with drugs. I say, let’s find out what went wrong with your body’s natural ability to keep itself healthy. What in your diet, your lifestyle, your mind and emotions, your stressors, your relationships, your sleep habits and environment are contributing to your symptoms, and how can we turn that around to start creating health, rather than hurting it?

Ayurveda, Functional Medicine and other evidence-based and time-tested therapies help the body heal itself. In addition to these integrative approaches, Dr. Lonsdorf’s practice also offers in-depth personal coaching to help patients achieve timely, lasting and deep resolution regarding underlying issues in relationships, career, family matters and other life stressors that contribute to many chronic health conditions.

Says Dr. Lonsdorf: “This highly personalized approach creates complete inner restoration, the real basis of healing.”

CUTV News Radio will feature Dr. Nancy Lonsdorf in an interview with Jim Masters on May 2nd at 1pm EDT and with Doug Llewelyn on May 9th at 1pm EDT.

TVOKids’ Giver 150 builds Canada’s biggest playground to celebrate the nation’s big birthday

TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, April 27, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — Giver, TVOKids’ award-winning live-action children’s series about kids helping to build playgrounds in their local Ontario communities, premieres today, Wednesday, April 26 at 6 pm on TVOKids, for a fourth season with a special mission. In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, Giver 150 takes playground construction to Ottawa, our nation’s capital, to build the biggest playground in the country.

“Giver 150 presents an amazing opportunity for school-aged kids to build civic engagement and deepen their learning and pride about Canada and its incredible cultural and geographical diversity,” says Marney Malabar, TVO’s Director of Kids TV. “TVOKids is thrilled to give kids a platform to see how their hard work creates meaningful impact in their communities.”

Giver 150 features a diverse group of kids from all over the country coming together to build a massive 4,600 square metre playground in the shape of Canada. In each of the ten episodes, kids focus on building a smaller part of the playground in the shape of one province or territory, celebrating each region’s unique geography, history, culture and people. The kids work alongside contractor and host, 20-year architectural design veteran Michael Lagimodiere, who helps them use power tools, dig holes and paint. New this season, Michael is joined by co-host by Dominique “Mique” Boisvenue, a talented House of PainT member and graffiti artist. As the park comes together one piece at a time, the Giver 150 team learns about giving back while learning more about their province, capital and country.

"Giver would not be possible without the unending enthusiasm from our kid participants or the dedication from our hundreds of volunteers”, says J.J. Johnson, Series Creator, Executive Producer, Sinking Ship Entertainment. “This season is the truest testament to Giver's mantra that anything is possible when a community pulls together.”

The Ottawa playground marks the largest and most ambitious build Giver has ever completed. Over the past three seasons, Giver has built 33 unique playgrounds around Ontario, with over 200 children and thousands of volunteers taking part.

A TVOKids original developed to help school-aged kids adopt a can-do attitude, Giver was created and produced by Sinking Ship Entertainment in association with TVO.

Giver 150 premieres Wednesday, April 26 at 6pm (repeated Saturdays at 11:30 am and Sundays at 1 pm). Giver 150 is also available on demand at TVOKids.com and the TVOKids YouTube Channel.

RALEIGH, NC, US, April 27, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — The East Coast Game Conference (ECGC) 2017 was a huge success with a record number of sessions, exhibitors and attendees.

This year ECGC partnered with Casual Connect to provide an Indie Prize scholarship and competition focused on the up and coming creative force of the games industry. The ECGC winner will be awarded a Casual Connect Indie Prize scholarship: a guaranteed spot at Indie Prize showcase in Seattle August 1-3rd, 2017, passes to Casual Connect including sessions and parties as well as free accommodations.

ECGC is proud to announce that Katsu Entertainment of Cary NC, developer of DOOMWHEEL, a wickedly fast-paced infinite runner set in the Warhammer Fantasy universe and coming to mobile devices is our winner for 2017.

In Doomwheel, the Skaven underworld is a rat's nest of deceit, danger, and backstabbing. As an up-and-coming warlock enginseer of clan Skryre, your only goal is to rise through the ranks of the ratmen by building the ultimate engine of destruction: the fastest and most powerful Doomwheel ever made! Powered by scampering rats and hallucinogenic warpstone, the Doomwheel embodies the sheer inhuman ingenuity of the Skaven race: an enormous iron-reinforced wheel, outfitted with spikes, blades, and blasting powerful bolts of lethal warp lightning as it crushes all in its path: enemies, or the least fortunate of your allies. Pilot your Doomwheel as it rattles through the battlefield at breakneck speeds in this fast-paced infinite arcade adventure. Dwarves got you down? Doomwheel. Rival clans done you wrong? Doomwheel. Goblin grief? Doomwheel. Shatter, skewer, shock and bounce foes of all shapes, sizes, and races as you claw out territory for yourself across the Old World. Develop a newer, deadlier, Doomwheel in your workshop while fending off the vengeful plots of your backstabbing rivals. Doomwheel is coming to smash everything in its path on mobile devices in 2017.

Another winner this year was Caitlin Rollyson of Central Piedmont Community College. She won ECGC's first annual T-Shirt design competition.

Congratulations to Dominique Mayer for winning the Wake Tech Simulation and Game Development 2D art contest and Brianna Deal for winning the 3D competition and Grand Prize.
