UMT Researchers Look to Honey Bees for Decision Making Guidance

Framing Decisions: Making Decisions that Account for Irrationality, People, and Constraints

J. Davidson Frame, PhD

A promising model for group decision making

Honey bees invented social media! We can learn a lot from them. Today, social media has focused attention on the actions and preferences of groups over individuals.”

— J. Davidson Frame, PhD

ROSSLYN, VIRGINIA, UNITED STATES, February 26, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — Which is better: Decisions made by a group or by individuals? Humans are split on this issue. Half say groups and half individuals. But honey bees are unanimous: the way to go is to make group decisions.

J. Davidson Frame, a professor of decision science at the University of Management and Technology, explores this preference in his book, Framing Decisions: Making Decisions that Account for Irrationality, People, and Constraints (San Francisco: Jossey-Bass). He points out that the matter of group decision making vs. individual decision making has been debated endlessly over the decades, putting countless university students to sleep in the classroom. That is, until today. What makes the issue gripping these days is that the power of social media — particularly crowd sourcing and "likes" registered on Facebook — has focused attention on the actions and preferences of groups over individuals.

So how do bees do it? It turns out that in the spring, after passing the winter in torpor, bees often split into two groups in order to avoid over-populating the hive. The queen deposits several eggs that are destined to grow future queen bees for the existing hive. Then she and a large portion of worker bees leave the hive as a swarm and settle at a nearby site, often on the branch of a tree. A hundred or so scouts fan out to find a new home. When an individual bee encounters a likely site, she returns to the swarm and performs a waggle dance. This dance serves two functions. First, the dance reflects the quality of the site: the more energetic the dance, the better the site. The second function of the waggle dance is to indicate where the site is: the attitude of the dance indicates the direction of the site (for example, it can be located 20 degrees to the left of the sun), while the number of waggles indicates distance (for example, six waggles may indicate a distance of 300 meters).

This process encourages other bees to visit the site. If they like it, they return to the swarm, do their waggle dance and encourage more visitors. At a certain point, when a critical mass of visitors express favor with the site, they vibrate their wings vigorously, creating a loud hum. This indicates the decision has been made. "Debate" is ended. The swarm then flies collectively to the site and builds a new hive.

2016 UMT Graduation Commencement

2016 UMT Graduates

The University of Management and Technology Gears Its Programs to Non-Traditional Students

On 24 July, UMT held its 2016 Commencement in Arlington, VA. There are 1,132 graduates in the class of 2016. The great majority are working professionals.”

— Online distance education created a global higher learning community

ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA, UNITED STATES, February 26, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — On 24 July, University of Management and Technology held its 2016 Commencement in Spectrum Theater in Arlington, VA. There are 1,132 graduates in the class of 2016. The great majority are working professionals.

Since 1998 when UMT began to offer degree programs, it has built a strong global learning community through its online and distance education. Geographical boundaries do not limit UMT and its students. In the past 18 years, UMT has provided various levels of education programs to 19,087 students, who reside in 50 states, the District of Columbia, 4 US territories in the United States, and in 77 countries worldwide. Of the nearly 20,000 students who have studied, 10,710 have earned their degrees from UMT.

Back in the old days, getting a college degree entailed shipping a trunk full of goodies to your college of choice the week before your Freshman year began, then sticking it out at the college for four years. Anyone who took longer than four years to complete a degree was viewed as some kind of weak-minded plodder. Today, students who make it through college in four years are a minority. A Department of Education fact sheet indicates that only 23.4% of students who enter a four year college actually graduate from that college within four years.

This is the new reality that the University of Management and Technology addresses in its degree programs. Most of its students are adults who have been working toward their degrees in bits and pieces as they earn a living, serve in the military, start a family, and squeeze in time to write term papers and prepare for exams. Many have attended several schools before settling down at UMT. Over the years they have accumulated quite a lot of transfer credit, so by the time they come to us, they are in a position to earn a degree in a year or two. UMT accepts up to 75% transfer credit for their undergrad degree programs.

Today's alternative students are looking to get a degree to help them move forward in their careers. What's interesting about them is that many have already developed valuable skills that make them employable and give them a toe-hold in a life career. Their principal goal in getting the degree is partially to pick up a few more skills; but chiefly, it's to get a degree that validates the expertise they have been developing over the past few years. For example, students who serve in the military are drawn to UMT’s undergraduate criminal justice or homeland security programs. They are comfortable doing police and security work, because they have experience in these areas through their military service. Another example: adult students who honed technical skills in business or in the military see a track management by enrolling in BS in Engineering Management degree. They are qualified to manage engineering work efforts thanks to the advanced technical skills they have acquired at work or in the military, coupled with the engineering management knowledge they have gained through the University of Management and Technology BS in Engineering Management.

Because UMT online courses allows students to self-paced, highly motivated students can complete their programs faster than at traditional semester-driven schools. If through hard work a student can complete a course in six weeks, then let him finish it and move on to the next course. The workload for self-paced courses is the same whether a student completes the course in six or a dozen weeks. Everyone must carry out the same load of work. But those who work harder, get through faster.

The University of Management and Technology's academic counseling service enables students to customize their programs to address their specific desires, skills and achievements. Whenever students enroll in the programs of the University of Management and Technology, they are assigned a counselor who provides them an Individual Learning Plan that meets their best interests. No two students have the identical learning plan, because each plan is tweaked to account for the student's past learning as well as current learning interests.

The option of heading off to a residential college program at a four year school is not real one for the great majority of adult, working students today. These students are looking for an affordable school that accepts the coursework they have completed and applies it to a degree; enables them to work flexibly toward the degree; and provides counseling that lets them put together a program that will serve them best in pursuing their careers. The University of Management and Technology serves them well in meeting these needs.

Lucas Roy Lehman's Intimacy Makeover to be Featured on CUTV News Radio

Intimacy in a healthy relationship is all about the on-going healing of the old wounds we carry of not being good enough, of not being lovable the way we are.”

— Lucas Roy Lehman

SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA, USA, February 24, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — The relationships we create are reflections of the beliefs we hold about ourselves. Unfortunately, too many of us hold unconscious limiting beliefs that we are not lovable as who we are. Even if we find the person we want, we never seem to experience that sense of relief that comes from being ourselves with all our vulnerabilities and contradictions.

Lucas Roy Lehman is an intimacy coach who works with women in their 40s, 50s and 60s who don’t have the relationships they want. Of course, the first thing you might notice about Lehman is that he’s a male intimacy coach for women.

“What’s special about working with me is I fuse expertise in the fields of neuroscience, mindfulness, behavior change, and sacred sexuality with the dynamics of masculine/feminine polarity to surface the real stuff: fear and desire,” says Lehman.

Lehman’s Intimacy Makeover programs are all about learning to stay and play in that charged energy of intimacy with confidence, vulnerability, and authenticity so they can show up powerfully to create the relationships they want. In working with Lehman, women are on the playground of that polarity and learn to be vulnerable with a man who is safe.

According to Lehman, intimacy for women is ultimately about feeling safe to be herself and trusting her partner. She wants to be seen for her good and bad qualities to heal the shame and fear that she is not lovable the way she is. The old story that “there’s something wrong with me otherwise things would be different…” is the real starting point for transformation. What’s true is that we are each lovable just the way we are, but not if we don’t really think we are.

“Intimacy in a healthy relationship is all about the on-going healing of the old wounds we carry of not being good enough, of not being lovable the way we are,” says Lehman. “It’s more edgy to be coached by a guy because it’s going to bring up all these feelings, and that’s what we want! Bring those limiting beliefs out into the light where they can be transformed.”

Old habits run deep. When we are in relationship, we look for familiar dangers and confirmation of our fears and limiting beliefs. In coaching, Lehman supports women to uncover and reprogram their old stories to create new neural pathways and a new sense of self love.

Lehman believes that every woman is inherently creative, resourceful and whole, and doesn’t need to be fixed. This creates a container of sacred space and unconditional love that most women have never experienced with a man before. As a result, they get to experience a man who has their best interests at heart, sees their light, and wants them to be the brightest, most fulfilled and fully expressed beings they can possibly be. Then they learn to see themselves and love themselves in a new empowered way, which attracts different men, with different behaviors, to create new satisfying relationships.

CUTV News Radio will feature Lucas Roy Lehman in an interview with Doug Llewelyn on February 28th at 2pm EST.

Listen to the show on BlogTalkRadio.

The Adventure Writers Competition 2017 opens for submissions March 1 – June 30!

International writing competition is sponsored by the Clive Cussler Collectors Society, Dirk Cussler will choose the winner.

Get in on the Action!”

— Dirk Cussler

DENVER, COLORADO, UNTITED STATES, February 16, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Adventure Writers Competition, sponsored by the Clive Cussler Collector's Society, opens for submissions of adventure-themed novels March 1 through June 30. A $1000 prize is awarded to the winner at the Clive Cussler Collectors Society Convention in October, 2017. Dirk Cussler is set to choose the winner from three finalists.

The competition is open to writers from anywhere on the planet (earth!) if they are unpublished, self-published or even traditionally published, as long as less than 5000 copies of the entry have been sold or given away. There is no restriction on the date of completion or publication – all are welcome. The entire $25 entry fee goes to promoting the winners and the competition. The AWC is part of a non-profit organization.

“The networking opportunity is as great as the “Clive” trophy, the money and meeting Dirk!” say Peter Greene, AWC Director. “This is our seventh year, and all the judges are ready to read manuscripts of completed novels that meet the entry requirements.”

Detailed information can be found at the AWC website www.adventurewriterscompetition.com Interviews of past winners and judges are highlighted on the site, as well as book trailers of the finalist’s novels.

For 2017, there will be two rounds. The first is the “opening round” where judges read the first 3000 – 5000 words of each entry. The top ten entries, our semi-finalists, move to the “Manuscript Round”. Here, judges strive to read each novel and choose the top three as our finalists. Then, it’s up to Dirk Cussler to choose the winner.

“You may be a fantastic novelist, but we will never know unless you enter the competition,” says Greene.

ACC NEWS Spotlights Martha Lerner of Zenmamalove on Doula Child Birth Education, & Parent Coaching

ACC News Talk Radio Spotlights Martha Lerner of Zenmamalove

Coral Springs, FL – Pregnancy, preparation and parenting… The most incredibly exhilarating yet mildly terrifying sensation can be the moment a person realizes that they’re going to be responsible for a child’s life. For pregnant women, the spectrum of emotions can turn moments of happiness into instances of deep sadness. For their family and significant others in their lives, support is equally necessary for a multitude of reasons. Everyone desires a smooth and easy pregnancy, both physically and emotionally. The reality is that this is no simple task and thankfully there are trained Doulas like Martha Lerner of Zenmamalove.

Martha spent over 15 years as a Middle School/High School teacher and always felt a deep connection towards helping others. Martha experienced the birth of her son at the age of 38 and suffered from post-partum depression. Losing her mother at a young age, Martha didn’t have the support system that is often necessary for a new parent after giving birth but she was fortunate enough to be introduced to a Doula. While attempting to continue teaching, Martha realized ultimately that her heart was no longer there as she yearned to help others to avoid the feelings and issues that she experienced firsthand.

ADD Advocate Karen Lowry to be Featured on CUTV News Radio

It’s a difficult disability to navigate, but it doesn’t mean that they’re not smart and capable. They have weaknesses but they also have strengths.”

— Karen Lowry

MEDFORD, NEW JERSEY, USA, February 23, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 11 percent of American children, ages four to 17, have ADHD. Children diagnosed with ADHD often present as inattentive, impulsive and hyperactive. As a result, they often struggle in school.

ADHD coaching recognizes the children with ADHD as whole and capable and supports them to develop goals, plans and strategies that promote success and a healthy self-esteem.

Karen Lowry is an ADHD Coach and advocate who helps Families, Teens, and College Students. navigate the many challenges specific to ADHD. Karen coaches her clients by helping to support study strategies and develop executive functioning skills.”

“It’s a difficult disability to navigate,” says Karen, “but they need to know it doesn’t mean that they’re not smart and capable. They have weaknesses but they also have strengths. They can overcome their difficulties.”

Inspired by experience with the youngest of her four children, who had struggled with ADHD as well as a co-occurring disorder of dyslexia, Karen pursued ADHD Coaching simply because she saw the need. As a former pediatric nurse, Karen says her journey has always been about reaching out and helping.

“I see a lot of struggling kids and a lot of desperate parents,” says Karen. “Like any parent, I needed to understand what was going on with my child. I sought to understand ADHD and advocated for my son to get to a better place. I became a certified ADHD coach to better help those around me."

Unfortunately, there isn’t much sympathy for behavior that presents as misbehavior. The prevailing belief is that a child should be able to control themselves. If they can’t, it’s a failure on the part of the parent. Even to this day, ADHD is a difficult diagnosis to understand for many schools.

This is where Karen can truly benefit her clients: advocacy.

“You can’t adequately coach a child if they’re not receiving the support at school that they need,” says Karen. “I need to know they are supported by their school before I can continue to coach them.”

Still, says Karen, while it’s important to have the support of the school, it’s even more important to have the parent involved on a day to day basis. Additionally, you can coach the parent around what’s happening with their child.

“Too often moms become the homework police and it’s detrimental to the relationship,” says Karen. “I can help them back off for their own sake.”

CUTV News Radio will feature Karen Lowry in an interview with Doug Llewelyn on February 27th at 11am EST.
