Presentation High School Sexual Abuse Victim States Catholic School Paid to Silence Her

Presentation High School forced victim and her family to sign an illegal confidentiality agreement.

SAN JOSE, CA, UNITED STATES, March 30, 2018 / — Presentation High School sex abuse victim, Grace Leonis, is publicly coming forward to state Principal Mary Miller, Athletic Director Stacey Mallison, Swim Coach Marisa Cozort, and Counselor Rosemarie Healy all violated the law by failing to immediately report her abuser, a water polo coach, to the authorities after receiving multiple complaints about the coach's sexual misconduct. Additionally, Presentation illegally attempted to buy her silence about the sexual abuse by forcing her to sign a confidentiality agreement.

In an interview with NBC Bay Area, Leonis says in the Fall of 2013, as a 13-year-old freshman, she was sexually groomed and then sexually abused by her Water Polo Coach, Jenna Roe. According to Leonis, "the sexual abuse would never have happened had Miller reported the grooming to the police as she was supposed to do."

An investigation conducted by retired San Jose Police Department Sergeant Michael Leininger revealed that at least three of her water polo teammates reported inappropriate "red flag" grooming behavior to Stacey Mallison, who in turn advised Mary Miller. Leonis' mother also raised concerns to Marisa Cozort and Rosemarie Healy. The four women did not report the suspicious sexual grooming behavior to law enforcement as required by the law. Instead, they worked to cover up the subsequent sexual abuse by bringing in a lawyer who worked to settle clergy sex abuse cases confidentially in the early 2000s. According Sgt. Leininger, who investigated sex crimes for over 25 years, "The failure to promptly report hampered the police investigation as it gave the perpetrator time to destroy critical evidence, jeopardizing a sexual abuse conviction."

According to attorney Robert Allard, "By demanding confidentiality in exchange for money, Presentation High School broke the law. California law prohibits parties from entering into confidentiality agreements involving potential sex crimes against children. These actions demonstrate the lengths Presentation will go to cover up childhood sexual abuse committed by its employees. It is clear the school was acutely concerned about its image and reputation, as the confidentiality agreement expressly states, 'the school will suffer irreparable harm' if the agreement is made public."

Even though the money would never be enough to pay for Leonis' future medical bills from the harm caused by the abuse, Leonis' parents and Grace agreed to the settlement after an intense 11-hour meeting with Mary Miller and her three attorneys. "They wore Grace down, re-traumatized her to the point of a breakdown, and then coerced them into signing the agreement," said attorney Robert Allard.

Leonis states she was terrified and self-conscious about the whole thing. "I didn't want anyone to know about the abuse, and I didn't want to talk about it at all. I thought everyone was going to think it was my fault, especially my friends and teachers at Presentation."

"Presentation High School's actions are no different than the silencing of Larry Nassar's victim, gymnast McKayla Maroney. In both cases, deals were made to muzzle the victims and to keep the sexual abuse out of the public's eye," said Allard. "Presentation will do anything to silence victims, even going as far as to make silence a condition of mediation." An email sent to Allard from Presentation High School's new legal team on February 14, 2018 states, "My proposal is that we get a mediation scheduled as soon as possible with an agreement that key players on all sides will be in attendance and that there will be a cooling off period in the media in the interim by all sides."

Leonis says she is exposing her traumatic story in hopes that the Presentation High School Board of Directors will make permanent changes in leadership and policy to protect all students from sexual predators. SOUTH BURLINGTON, VT , UNITED STATES, March 30, 2018 / — BURLINGTON, VT, 3/31-4/1 2018: Students from all over the country will be traveling to Vermont this weekend for a very special event. The Lawrence Debate Union, UVM’s debate team, is hosting this year’s North American Women’s and Gender Minorities Debate Championship, NAW*DC. The event will be held at Benedict Auditorium in Marsh Life Science both days. Saturday the event runs from 8 am to 6 pm and Sunday 8 am to 3 pm. The final, with the four top teams, will be held Sunday at 3.

Debate gives the opportunity for students from various backgrounds to discuss complicated and relevant topics. Everyone is given the same topic to address while individual teams are randomly assigned either ‘for’ or ‘against’ the topic. The arbitrary assignment of topic and position requires students to be informed on a wide range of subjects as well as understand the complexity of such topics.

NAW*DC is an exciting and unique event in the Debate community because it celebrates women and gender minorities, groups who are minorities in debate, and often are marginalized within the debate community. Only women and gender minorities will be debating at the tournament, and only women and gender minorities will be in positions of leadership. The event itself is a mark of progress as it gives focus to social issues while also asking important questions for this day and age. Has feminism successfully become intersectional? How has feminism changed after a year of Trump? What does a feminist future look like?

In addition, speakers who worked for same-sex marriage in Vermont will speak Sunday at 1 pm during the awards ceremony. NAW*DC is is proud to welcome Nina Beck and Stacy Jolles, who were one of the three plaintiff couples in the Baker v State of Vermont case seeking the right to same-gender marriage. As well as Beth Robinson, best known for her role in the Vermont freedom to marry struggle. She co-founded and led the Vermont Freedom to Marry Task Force through its fifteen-year effort to secure the freedom to marry for same-sex couples in Vermont. Along with her law partner Susan Murray and Mary Bonauto of Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders, she represented three same-sex couples who sought marriage licenses from the State of Vermont in the landmark case of Baker v. State.

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, UNITED STATES, March 29, 2018 / — BOSTON – MGH Institute of Health Professions and Harvard-Kent Elementary School in the Charlestown neighborhood of Boston have created a formal partnership intended to improve pupils’ literacy skills and health while increasing opportunities for MGH Institute graduate students to learn about the needs of elementary school children.

The collaboration will strengthen the existing relationship between the Boston health sciences graduate school and the K-5 public school. For the past several years, students from the MGH Institute’s speech-language pathology program have done clinical rotations at the Harvard-Kent, assisting pupils with reading skills.

“While we are excited about the ways we have collaborated to date, we know there is so much more these two great educational organizations can achieve together because we have similar missions,” said MGH Institute President Paula Milone-Nuzzo. “This is just the beginning.”

For Harvard-Kent Principal Jason Gallagher, developing a stronger association with the MGH Institute is welcomed. “This partnership recognizes the importance of what the MGH Institute can do to help our students become better learners,” he said. “We’re very excited about it.”

Other anticipated benefits of the partnership include impacting the health and well-being of the Harvard-Kent community, and building an educational bridge that serves the Charlestown and Greater Boston community. To assist in this effort, the Institute announced it will hire a part-time coordinator to oversee the various activities and look for new opportunities in which the schools can collaborate.

“Partnerships like these are the glue that holds our schools together,” said Robert Consalvo, chief of staff for Boston Public Schools Superintendent Tommy Chang. “It’s crucial that the Institute is willing to invest in Harvard-Kent to bring it to new heights. It’s what makes our schools and the city of Boston so strong.”

Dr. Emily Zeman, an instructor of occupational therapy at the MGH Institute, during the past year has taught mindfulness techniques to many Harvard-Kent teachers and pupils. Dr. Joanna Christodoulou, an assistant professor of communication sciences and disorders, led a summer literacy program in 2017 that she will continue this summer using a grant from the school department. Also, for the past several years, Harvard-Kent has hosted students during the IHP’s annual Community IMPACT Day of service, while the graduate school has made several donations of books, games, and other supplies.

“The MGH Institute is a great resource for the community, and this is an example of what it does,” said state Representative Dan Ryan, whose district includes Charlestown. “This partnership will help to break down the walls in communities by teaching the next generation of learners.”
