Author and Retired Aerospace Engineer Allan J. McDonald to be Featured on Close Up Radio

OGDEN, UTAH, UNITED STATES, March 2, 2020 / — On a cold January morning in 1986, NASA launched the Space Shuttle Challenger. What happened next is one of the great American tragedies: an explosion in the sky. All seven crew members on board, including schoolteacher Sharon Christa McAuliffe, were killed.

What many people don’t know about Challenger is how easily it could have been prevented.

Retired aerospace engineer Allan J. McDonald is the author of Truth, Lies, and O-rings: Inside the Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster, which recounts McDonald’s experiences at on that fateful day and examines the role of ethics in leadership.

“There have been several books written about Challenger, none by anybody involved in the event,” says McDonald. “I decided that an accurate historical record of what really happened was important.”

Major NASA contractors must have a representative onsite for all space shuttle launches. These individuals are responsible for resolving problems and supporting the launch. As the director of the Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Motor Project, McDonald served in this role for the engineering contractor Morton Thiokol.

It was 18 degrees Fahrenheit in Florida the night before the Challenger launch: a bad forecast. McDonald was concerned such below-freezing temperatures might impact the integrity of the solid rockets' O-rings, and the boosters would not operate properly in those temperatures.

According to the vice president of engineering, the lowest recommended temperature for a safe launch was 53 degrees.

“The engineers went through methodical presentation that evening,” recalls McDonald. “We assumed at that point they would just scrub it for another day and wait for warmer weather.”

Instead, NASA challenged the basis for that recommendation, claiming the data was inconclusive.

Engineer Bob Ebeling told his wife that night Challenger would blow up.

“There was a mechanical failure and a failure in the management system,” says McDonald. “They made the decision to launch and it proved to be the wrong decision.”

McDonald would later testify before the Rogers Commission, a presidential commission formed to investigate the accident. As he sought to draw attention to the real reasons behind the disaster, McDonald was singled out for retribution by his employer, until the commission’s chairman William Rogers personally intervened. Today, McDonald is the only American ever to be reinstated to his job by an act of Congress.

As a result of his efforts, McDonald would be instrumental in implementing the sweeping changes that markedly improved the safety of future missions.

“Leadership is about making tough decisions, it's lonely and difficult and sometimes impossible,” says McDonald. “That's why a more conservative approach is probably the wisest course. There's always another day.”

One of the reasons for the existence of the EduJedi was the observation by LeiLani Cauthen, the CEO of the Learning Counsel, and author of the book The Consumerization of Learning, that the growing digital curriculum software space was more complex than schools were prepared to understand. In 2013, she was getting twenty or more requests from new curriculum software companies a month as a member of the media. They wanted to demo to her or her news team to get editorial coverage. This led to doing a count and finding some 7,000 companies, most of them new and ranging from single one-off learning Apps on App stores, to whole digital libraries. to full courseware, to learning management systems, open educational free resources, and communications systems. If this much change was hitting the media intermediaries, then it would be overwhelming for schools. It would be disruptive. Schools have been used to doing book adoptions, a long and drawn out process that provided years’ worth of content to cover a large swath of curriculum. These old processes still hamper technologies of all kinds because they do not keep up with the fast-changing tech field.

While many leaders and schools do not see technology as necessarily disruptive, this is partly because of the way in which they are incorporating it. Technology is mostly being “allowed,” not really “led,” in detail at the classroom level. Technology as a tack on to the way teaching is done today is disruptive minimally to the administration, but really disruptive to teaching and learning. It’s something the teachers do, at least that’s the way many leaders think of it. It’s a teaching and learning thing, but not really an institution-wide thing.

The fact is that technology as a disruptive force is going much wider than the classroom, something to transform education into something else overall, possibly a different delivery model of learning that changes organizational structure as well, even the use of space, calendaring of activities, planning of time and staff duties, alternate grouping of students, and more.

Judge Judith Gibson of the New South Wales District Court approved a cryptocurrency exchange account to be held as "security" against legal fees and court costs. The judge was asked to order that the $20,000.00 cryptocurrency wallet be moved into a court controlled bank account. Today, one needs millions of dollars to achieve that goal, and in most cases, the person with the most cash wins. It’s time to level the playing field! Dark money disenfranchises voters, creates a pay for play atmosphere in American politics, and corrupts government. Our politicians end up answering to their big donors and not to their constituents.

Immigration – We must, for the sake of our Republic and our freedoms, secure our borders! We must fund and protect our Border Agents and give them the tools and equipment necessary to stop the illegal flow of people and drugs into our country. We need to provide an easier path for those who simply wish to come here for work. Citizenship should not be confused with documented workers.

Health Care – I believe that government has no business running healthcare for Americans. Through competition and price transparency we can lower the cost. We need to hold Non-profit Hospital Corporations accountable. They get a pass on millions of dollars in Taxes while they expand business and pay their Executives lucrative salaries. Too many Hospital and Health corporations reap the benefits of tax-exempt status while their actions resemble those of a For Profit business. Further, Patients taking lifelong maintenance medications such as insulin and blood thinners, should be able to purchase these essential medications directly from manufacturers, eliminating the middle-man mark ups.

Health Coverage – We can do better by incentivizing businesses to provide health coverage for their employees and by providing tax breaks to businesses and individuals for expensive premiums.

Marijuana descheduled as Schedule 1 drug – The time has come to deschedule cannabis and remove it from the Controlled Substances list. Schedule 1 drugs are those that have no medical benefit and are highly addictive. Both premises have been proven false for marijuana. Further, the US needs to work with the UN and WHO to amend International Treaties which criminalize use, possession, and cultivation. States should be able to move forward with legalization without the fear of reciprocity from our Federal Government.

Letter of Appeal from Shincheonji Church of Jesus in Regards to COVID-19

In recent days, Shincheonji Church of Jesus has been the target of scapegoating for the COVID-19 virus outbreak. This is an official statement.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, USA, March 2, 2020 / — We would like to express a word of comfort to fellow citizens who are striving to overcome these difficult times. To contain the spread of the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19), Shincheonji Church of Jesus provided accurate information about all congregants, affiliated locations, and trainees in Korea and abroad, and we are cooperating with all measures of the South Korean authorities by utilizing all of our capabilities, putting utmost efforts for prevention and cure.

Shincheonji Church of Jesus provided the list of all 245,605 congregants to the health authorities at their request. We provided the list of 212,324 congregants in Korea on Feb 25 and the list of 33,281 congregants abroad on Feb 26. As for trainees, they have not been registered officially as members of Shincheonji Church of Jesus, so the church could not provide the list of trainees indiscreetly. However, on Feb 27, the health authorities requested the list on condition that they will take legal responsibility in case it is leaked. Therefore, we checked and provided the list of 65,127 trainees (54,176 in Korea and 10,951 abroad) promptly after the agreement.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) sent this list to local governments on the condition of confidentiality. On Feb 26, 17 cities and provinces started conducting telephone surveys with the congregants of Shincheonji Church of Jesus, and those with symptoms have been tested for infection first.

In regards to COVID-19, the allegation that Shincheonji Church of Jesus is intentionally hiding the number of its congregants is absolutely untrue. Shincheonji is aware of the present health crisis and considers the health and safety of citizens and congregants as the highest priority, and has submitted information to the proper authorities.

An individual of an organization sued Shincheonji claiming we violated the Infection Disease Control and Prevention Act by refusing to submit data or providing false data. This is not true as we are cooperating and providing information requested by the health authorities.

Is not belonging to mainstream churches in Korea a reason to die? We call for the truth regarding this case. Please do not dismiss it as a mere issue related to religion or family, but please look into the fundamental nature of the issue. Shincheonji Church of Jesus did not create COVID-19. We are citizens who have followed the instructions of the authorities, and we are victims of the virus and religious persecution.

We want to make it clear once again that we did not intentionally delay providing the list of congregants or hide anything. Providing such a list was not an easy decision for Shincheonji Church of Jesus. Among our congregants, there are many who suffer from domestic violence, persecution, and even life-threatening situations because of their faith. This is backed by the number of congregants who are taken to so-called “Cult Counseling Offices” and have faced confinement, violence, and illegal actions. The number amounts to over 100 congregants per year. In the midst of such persecution, two female congregants lost their lives. One was killed by her husband and the other by her father, and there was the third victim on Feb 26.

We are deeply sorry for infections caused by some congregants who were hesitant to reveal their affiliation with Shincheonji at first. However, as politicians and media outlets were criticizing Shincheonji severely day after day–even calling it the epicenter of the virus–these people were afraid to say that they are Shincheonji members. We ask for your understanding once again.

Since the situation occurred, some 4,000 cases of injustice against Shincheonji congregants have been reported. These negative actions include notices of termination of employment, workplace bullying, domestic persecution, labeling, and slandering.

We demand media outlets that are reporting fake, speculative, or one-sided news based on the claims of slanderers to stop immediately. Please stop framing Shincheonji as the main culprit of the COVID-19 outbreak. We take all measures possible to protect our congregants. We will fight to the end against fake news and the “cult” framing that mainstream churches have been promoting.

The Shincheonji headquarters and church workers across Korea are cooperating with local governments and making phone calls to congregants. We promise to exert all efforts and will continue to cooperate with the health authorities and local governments to bring the COVID-19 epidemic to an end.

COVID-19 has brought China to a standstill but the TEFL industry is still thriving.

VANCOUVER, BC, CANADA, March 1, 2020 / — Anyone who’s turned on a TV, read a newspaper or accessed the internet in 2020 has undoubtedly heard of the novel Coronavirus, recently named COVID-19 by scientists.

The headlines and sensational reporting on the Coronavirus has gripped the world in fear as citizens of more and more countries are getting infected and the numbers continue to climb. As of February 24th 2020, there are a reported 79,737 confirmed cases internationally and 2,628 deaths.

While the coronavirus is a very contagious pandemic, it’s actually not much more dangerous than the common flu and the global panic is largely unwarranted. Just like a regular flu, the majority of infected people will make a full recovery and 25,271 of the confirmed 79,737 cases have already recovered. Deaths via COVID-19 are mainly in the infirm and elderly; sadly common with any strain of flu.

The coronavirus is believed to have originated in the wet markets of Wuhan, China early in 2020 which is where the vast majority of cases have been contained in a strict quarantine by the Chinese government.

While the majority of the world is largely unaffected, China is a different story. Even outside of Wuhan, normally bustling cities are seemingly deserted and empty with citizens choosing to stay home and wait out the pandemic rather than go to work or school and risk infection.

Because of this, China and it’s vast and powerful economy has been brought to a grinding halt, a mean feat for the country with the world’s largest population.

So how does this affect the TEFL Industry?

China has the highest demand for TEFL teachers in the world and offers some of the best salaries and employment packages available to qualified EFL teachers.

However, along with the rest of China’s economy, schools have also been shut down in most cities and provinces with children staying home to avoid the risk of infection. Many TEFL teachers already in China have been given a temporary leave of absence and have the option to either wait out the coronavirus in their homes in China or return to their native country temporarily until the outbreak subsides. Most of the provinces/cities in China are treating the outbreak differently but almost all provinces have been pushing the expected school resume date further and further back. Some provinces expect school to be back up and running as early as mid March but many TEFL teachers already in China speculate that there’s a high possibility of things remaining closed until as late as mid April. Some schools are continuing classes online where teachers and students can connect via apps. The Chinese government has mandated that all employees have to be paid their full salary during the outbreak regardless of how many work days are missed which is great news for teachers currently in China.

Hiring of more TEFL teachers in China has been largely halted but it’s expected to resume in full swing once the worst of the COVID-19 outbreak is over. The TEFL industry in most other countries has been largely unaffected with the exceptions of Korea and Japan where the toll for those infected with the coronavirus is steadily on the rise. Vietnam is also starting to see a climb in confirmed COVID-19 infections.

Asia still has many other great options for those wishing to teach abroad like Thailand and Indonesia to name a couple. There are also tons of TEFL jobs In European countries like Spain and the Czech Republic. Latin America is also untouched by the coronavirus.

Despite the current damage COVID-19 has wreaked on the Chinese economy, it’s not to say that China’s TEFL industry has completely shut down. Where one industry comes to a halt, another ramps up to fill the void left in the market and that’s where online teaching comes in.

Rather than have their children sitting at home idle with nothing to do, many Chinese parents have opted to continue their child’s education online, where classes are taught via video chat and there is no risk of infection.

Online teaching is nothing new. It remains the fastest growing sector of the TEFL market today even without the added surge from the coronavirus outbreak. Teaching online has many appeals to it like flexibility in hours and the ability to earn a decent salary without ever leaving the comfort of your own home. For the hardcore adventurer, online teaching also gives one the option of being truly nomadic. You can teach from anywhere in the world with an internet connection leaving you free to travel wherever you like and earn the money needed to do so. It’s truly a wondrous innovation in education.

Online teaching sessions are usually one-on-one which is generally far easier than teaching a classroom full of 30 plus students where behavioural issues can be difficult to address. An average teaching session lasts about an hour and largely consists of conversational practice.

A bachelor's degree, passport from a native English speaking country and teaching experience do all go a long way in the online job hunt but they are not strictly necessary; there are hundreds of reputable online teaching companies out there and not all of them have strict requirements.

The one main requirement for most online teaching companies is a TEFL certificate of at least 100 hours which is obtained easily enough. Upon completion of your TEFL course, your TEFL provider will be able to help you secure an online job without too much trouble.
