Research Authors Weigh the Pros and Cons of Publishing in Open Access Journals

open scientific textbook in black and white

Open access journals allow more new research to see the light of day. But this universal access can come at a cost.

Wordvice reporter and editor Andrew Kim assess the merits–and caveats–of submitting scientific research to open access journals.

NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, September 2, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — An important feature of COVID-19, as a subject of scientific research, is that nearly all research on it is free to read. It is easy to dismiss this phenomenon as a temporary response to the pandemic, but it’s unlikely that everything will go back to being behind journal paywalls. This is because the transition to open access models has been underway decades before the COVID-19 outbreak; the pandemic has simply given the movement a strong boost forward.

This unrestricted access to academic material relevant to COVID-19 is making research on the virus faster and more efficient. But should open-access models be adopted by all journals in the long run? What are the benefits and drawbacks of open access? Here are the main pros and cons of open access as it relates to academic publication.

THE PROS:

1. Widespread distribution
The most cited, and perhaps also the greatest, benefit of open access is the possibility of widespread distribution. Wider dissemination of scholarly articles means more new ideas for new studies, which makes academic research more nimble.

Studies have shown that authors are more likely to be cited when their articles are more visible. In 2018, nearly 19 million journal articles were open access and those publications earned a minimum 18 percent more citations than their closed access counterparts. This is proof that open access gives studies more exposure, thus allowing them to have a greater impact.

Additionally, under an Open Access CC-BY license, authors own the copyrights to their works. This means an author is free to distribute a given work outside of a single journal, which can further increase a study’s exposure.

2. Swift and straightforward publication
With traditional methods of publication, it can take six to nine months for a submitted manuscript to appear in a journal. In contrast, open access journals have significantly shorter wait times between acceptance and publication. And in the case of preprints, which have been gaining popularity with COVID-19 research, the wait time is virtually nonexistent. Shorter wait times can make academic research more efficient, allowing for a greater number of discoveries to be made within a shorter period of time.

3. Access across fields and economic boundaries
With open access, everyone can benefit from a scientific discovery. Articles published in traditional journals are typically accessed only by a select group of researchers. However, the far-reaching nature of science means that nearly everyone has a stake in scientific research. Open access makes research available not only to scientists but also to students, businesses, and policymakers.

Furthermore, open access applies globally. Traditional journals have high paywalls, with some academic subscriptions costing as much as $40,000 for full online access. Such steep prices have not only caused the libraries of even well-established institutions to cancel subscriptions but also makes many articles inaccessible to researchers in developing countries. Open access allows academics to be part of an international scientific discussion regardless of their access to funding.

THE CONS:

1. Potential problems with quality assurance
While concerns about the quality of open access articles have largely diminished, it’s not yet an obsolete issue. Many academics are still apprehensive about the accelerated publication process that’s characteristic of open access.

COVID-19 has also led to researchers posting more early-stage research and publishing more preprints, which are full drafts of research papers that are shared publicly before undergoing peer review. This, along with journals making all coronavirus-related research free to read, has made scientific communication faster and more efficient.
The issue with preprints, however, is that it can be difficult to assess the validity of a study and guarantee manuscript quality. New methods of evaluating research should be established if the scientific publication industry is to fully adopt open access models.

ESL researchers who wish to strengthen their manuscript quality may also consider online editing services. Such services employ professional academic editors with graduate degrees and backgrounds in a variety of disciplines. These editors are familiar with not only the English language but also academic conventions and formatting. The certificate of editing – that many companies provide free-of-charge for every order – demonstrates to readers that a manuscript has received professional English editing.

2. Can be expensive for authors
As mentioned previously, payment is necessary to read open access articles. However, virtually all journals – both traditional and open access – charge a fee at the time of submission to cover various publication costs. Traditional journals often charge about $100-250 per page and/or $150-1000 per color figure. Open access journals, on the other hand, charge a flat fee that can range from as low as $8 to as high as $5000. This means that it’s possible for the costs of traditional publication to be less prohibitive for authors. Some newer open access journals that have a low processing free also have a low impact factor (IF), which devalues the lower cost of publication. Authors should carefully compare various traditional and open access journals to choose the method of publication that best suits their needs.

Financial Advisor Don Dirren Discusses the Myth of the 'Buy and Hold' Investment Strategy

Financial advisor Donald Dirren discusses the myth of the 'buy and hold' investment strategy.

PHOENIX, AZ, USA, September 2, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — The "buy and hold" strategy has been popular in the investment world for decades. However, despite what many assume, it isn't an investment strategy that suits everyone. Financial advisor Donald Dirren states the buy and hold strategy is famed for its simplicity. It doesn't require a lot of effort or financial expertise. Unfortunately, Donald Dirren explains that's why this investment strategy isn't exactly foolproof.

"The buy and hold investment strategy is alluring, because it appears as a way to get rich without needing to commit all of your time and energy," Don Dirren says.

Don Dirren explained that the buy and hold strategy is simple. Make a stock investment and hold onto it for 20 years or more. A number of academic studies show that a proper, diversied portfolio of investments in the stock market does not lose money when held onto for more than 20 years. However, that's where the myth is revealed. The strategy ignores the entire concept of assessing and managing risk.

Don Dirren explains that this investment strategy implies that an investor can purchase stocks at any price, and see gains if they simply hold onto them for 20 years. He asks those considering investing if they've ever made a purchase without considering price at all. Don Dirren explains that if you wouldn't make an everyday purchase without considering price, why would you make a stock market investment without considering price?

"The studies in support of the buy and hold strategy are skewed," Don Dirren says. "Investors must sell stocks and replace them often. Stocks often vanish or are reduced to zero, and the studies in suppport of the buy and hold strategy don't show this."

Don Dirren explains that risk management is a major part of every investment strategy, and buy and hold investing completely eliminates that concept. He adds that its a passive approach to investing, that is not likely to help you get the most out of what you put into the stock market. Don Dirren asks why investors would choose to be passive in investing, when they would never choose to be passive in their careers, relationships, and other aspects of life.

"The buy and hold strategy implies that making zero transactions throughout the course of your investment term is ideal, and that's completely false," Don Dirren explains. "A qualified financial advisor will combine your investment strategy with a risk management strategy to create results that are far greater and more reliable than trying a buy and hold strategy on your own."

Don Dirren finished by stating that the buy and hold strategy is often pushed as a way for individuals to invest on their own from home. He suggests always consulting a qualified financial advisor to make sound investments that don't eliminate the essential strategy of risk management.

Eric Strand of Marshfield, MA Discusses the Three Phases of Career Development

MARSHFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, UNITED STATES, September 2, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — Eric Strand of Marshfield, MA, a senior UX product designer, discussed the three phases of career development in a recent interview with Kivo Daily.

A graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Eric Strand maintains music as a hobby, but has built a name for himself in the software industry, with this year marking his 15-year anniversary as a UX product designer.

Throughout his illustrious career, Strand has had the opportunity to design and produce user-friendly web and mobile properties for a number of companies both big and small, including Adobe and his own alma mater — Berklee College of Music.

During the interview, Strand shared exactly how he got started in his industry and how he developed a successful career, moving up the ladder until he reached his current status as a senior UX product designer.

“After studying at Berklee College of Music, I built, owned, and operated a new digital recording studio called One Language Productions. It was a great experience and I worked with a lot of up and coming local acts, but it was a love of the job that kept me going even when there was little money to be earned,” he said.

Eventually Eric Strand obtained an interview with the Strategic Interactive Group (Now Digitas) for their Digital Studio group and it was from there that his career began to flourish.

“I was quickly hired and started my online media career as a senior designer for Adobe, FedEx, Disney, and IBM,” said Strand.

For young professionals newly beginning their careers, Strand discussed the three phases of professional development that everyone must follow, in order to pave the way to success.

“Professional growth takes time and effort, so be patient with yourself. You will not land your dream job or dream salary right off the bat. Really, to me professional development takes place in three phases: doing, becoming, and being,” shared Mr. Strand.

The “doing phase” is at the start of one’s career, when we are ongoingly exploring our interests to determine what truly inspires us to get out of bed in the morning, Eric Strand explained. That is followed by the “becoming phase” during which we are honing our knowledge and skills through educational courses and taking the initial steps in our career through junior positions. Finally, once you lay the groundwork, become confident and make a name for yourself in your field, you are truly in the “being” phase, said Strand.

Spiritual Healer and Psychic Medium Debbie Squizzero to be Featured on Close Up Radio

NORTH PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, UNITED STATES, September 2, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — Our deceased loved ones are always with us trying to speak to us and get our attention to let us know they are OK and at peace. Most of all they want to demonstrate to us that love never dies and that life is eternal. When we lose a loved one, we must learn to speak the language of spirit, a language of energy, vibration and frequency. Spirit will bring us the people we need to help us rediscover our soul's purpose.

Debbie Squizzero is a spiritual healer and psychic medium with strong, intuitive gifts. Debbie is dedicated to “healing people one soul at a time” by reconnecting them with their deceased loved ones to provide guidance, clarity or insight for past, present or future issues.

Debbie encourages her clients to live successful, fulfilling lives by delivering accurate, healing and loving information during their session. Her goal is for each client to experience a positive session that will leave them with a sense of ease, peace, closure or healing.

“You're so much more than what you think you are,” says Squizzero. “The obstacles and challenges in our lives are not there to make you miserable, they're here to teach you. Your soul is here to learn, to love, to grow, and to teach. That's why your soul chooses to come here to the physical world, or as I like to call it Earth School. Earth School is the hardest school your soul will ever attend. You will be given pop quizzes you had no idea were coming your way and tests you did not know you had to study for.”

Originally an early childhood special education teacher, personal difficulties in her early thirties drew her to a reading with a local Spiritual Healer, where she discovered the spiritual gifts that would eventually change her life.

“My desire to help people comes from my own struggles in life,” recalls Squizzero. “I have experienced a wide range of emotional situations throughout the course of my life which in hindsight has helped me to grow and develop into an excellent Psychic Medium. These significant emotional events occurred so that I could deliver messages to my clients while feeling a deep sense of compassion and understanding for them.”

According to Squizzero, “the other side” is only universal, eternal love. It is nothing more than another realm of consciousness. There is no judgement, bitterness, resentment, jealously envy, etc. Those are feelings that our soul comes to the physical world to experience.

Our deceased loved ones communicate through their energy, through pictures or feelings, so Squizzero must raise her vibration to meet them in this place of immense love.

“I love that I can connect with these beautiful energies and souls from the other side and bring comfort to those in grief.” says Squizzero. “I love that I can give my clients the tools to empower themselves and to heal themselves. I’m helping them to understand their life and understand their purpose here in the physical world in order to help move them forward. To ultimately help them grow and expand in their thinking and perspective attending Earth School.”

Close Up Radio will feature Debbie Squizzero in an interview with Doug Llewelyn on September 4th at 2pm EDT

Research Identifies the Contactless Technologies Customers Want to See When QSR Dining Rooms Reopen

As people adjust to life during a pandemic, dine-in guests at fast food restaurants are ready to tap and wave their way into contactless commerce.

When we talked with restaurant operators, it confirmed our hunch. They thought they’d addressed everything, but many hadn't considered how to manage trash to guard against germs and virus spread.”

— Jeff Tolke, CEO, Compaction Technologies, Inc.

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, UNITED STATES, September 2, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — Minneapolis, MN (August 2020) – As people adjust to life during a pandemic, dine-in guests at fast food restaurants are ready to tap and wave their way into contactless commerce.

The onset of COVID-19 was met by many ambitious operators who made quick and nimble changes to their operations as businesses shifted to 100% drive thru and curbside pickup. Once that settled, new discussions around accommodating social distancing while limiting the spread of the virus began to surface. The big question? What happens when we reopen dining rooms?

New research reveals that guests frequenting QSR and fast casual restaurants have definite preferences when it comes to contactless technology. In a study conducted earlier this year, results show little doubt that guests returning to dining rooms expect changes that include touchless controls from ordering to trash disposal.

The independent, blind study was conducted by Axiom Marketing in Bloomington, Minnesota, and commissioned by Compaction Technologies, Inc. (CTI), manufacturer of Original ecotrash front-of-house trash compactors, which are found in thousands of fast food dining rooms, mall food courts, cafeterias, and other high-volume facilities throughout the U.S. CTI’s products all use contactless technology.

CTI Chief Executive Officer Jeff Tolke and his team began seeing articles a month or so into the pandemic about how restaurants will change when the doors reopen. Articles mentioned the many contactless options available today, including ordering, payment and paper towel dispensers. What was missing was any mention of contactless trash disposal.

“Despite being in thousands of restaurants across the country, the contactless discussion around how to reopen dining rooms did not address trash disposal,” Tolke said. “We started thinking maybe people accept the status quo because they don’t know any other options. When we talked with operators, it confirmed our hunch. They thought they’d addressed everything, but many had not considered how they will handle the trash. That’s when we commissioned the study, and the results jumped off the page at us.”
• More than 71% of respondents said they are Definitely Interested or Interested in contactless payment systems
• Nearly 47% of guests are Definitely Concerned or Concerned about the use of table markers at fast food restaurants
• 41% are Definitely Concerned or Concerned about using trash cans on their next fast food visit

When presented with an alternative, guests had this to say about trash disposal:
• 76% are Definitely Interested or Interested in contactless trash compactors

Air dryers in restrooms were preferred by 59% of respondents, who answered Definitely Interested or Interested. That surprised Tolke and his team given research showing air dryers can spread disease through forced air circulation. But, when guests were presented with the alternative of contactless paper towel dispensers and traditional trash cans for disposal, 71% preferred this method of hand drying. The results jumped to an incredible 78% Definitely Interested or Interested when contactless dispensers and contactless paper towel disposal were offered.

Not only do guests prefer these technologies, Tolke says, they’re sustainable alternatives to what’s commonly used. Contactless trash compactors compress eight bags of trash into one, which translates to 85% fewer trash bag changes, and a 90% reduction in trash bag use. Fewer trash bags means lower dumpster volume and less trash hauling cost. It also means staff has more time for other tasks, like helping customers.

CTI is making the complete study results available to anyone who would like to see the full results, including opinions on ordering kiosks vs. at the counter, and demographics of survey participants. Email the company to request a copy via email at: contactus@compactiontechnologies.com.
