PRESS RELEASE: Comptroller Don Huffines Announces 100,000 Students Receiving Texas Education Freedom Accounts
(AUSTIN) — Texas Comptroller Don Huffines announced today that funding has been delivered to more than 100,000 students participating in Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) as students across the state head back to school.
“Texas Education Freedom Accounts are built on a simple but powerful idea: Parents know what’s best for their children,” Huffines said. “Reaching this important milestone demonstrates the demand for educational choice in Texas.”
Huffines previously announced more than 85,000 students had received funding. The new awards bring the number to 101,600, and that figure is expected to increase as additional awards are made. The Texas program is the first program of its kind to serve more than 100,000 students in its first year.
“Giving parents control of the funding helps every child access the education that is right for them and forces all schools to compete by delivering better results,” Huffines said.
Parents can use TEFA to pay for approved educational expenses, including private school tuition, homeschool curriculum, tutoring, special education services, school supplies and uniforms. All payments must be made through the program’s secure online portal.
The Comptroller’s office awards accounts to students based on available funding. Once a student receives an award, their parents have four weeks to opt in to the program and confirm their child’s enrollment if they are attending a private school. Parents must complete these steps before a child can receive funding in their account and count as a participant.
More than 100,000 students remain on the program waitlist for the 2026-27 school year.
More information is available at EducationFreedom.Texas.Gov. Parents who would like to apply for the program in future years can join the program interest list.
