Harford County Public Schools Educator Named 2027 Maryland Teacher of the Year

BALTIMORE (October 9, 2026) – Today, Michael James, English Department Chair at North Harford High School in Harford County Public Schools (HCPS), was named the 2027 Maryland Teacher of the Year.

James was selected among seven finalists for the award, announced Friday at the 36th Annual Teacher of the Year Gala. 

“Michael James embodies the transformative power of teaching,” said Dr. Carey M. Wright, State Superintendent of Schools. “His innovation, compassion, and unwavering commitment to student success make him an extraordinary representative of Maryland’s educators. We are proud to honor his leadership and impact in our classrooms.”

“Michael James’ work reflects the very best of Maryland’s teaching profession,” said Dr. Joshua L. Michael, State Board of Education President. “His commitment to elevating student achievement and empowering his colleagues demonstrates a deep passion for public education. The State Board is proud to recognize his accomplishments and looks forward to the impact he will continue to make across our schools.”

James has more than 30 years of experience in education. He has taught in several schools as a teacher, coach, curriculum writer, and professional development leader. He participates in district workgroups on grading, reading, and technology while serving as the Voices of Equity advisor and editor of the Misentity magazine.

He will compete for the National Teacher of the Year award in the spring and spend the upcoming year as a speaker and advisor, participating in meetings and events hosted by the National Teacher of the Year Program. 

Maryland Teacher of the Year finalists included Alison Benkovic, Baltimore County Public Schools; Emily Brynes, Carroll County Public Schools; Kacy Valentine, Howard County Public School System; Clara Allsup, Prince George’s County Public Schools; Alice Tickler, Queen Anne’s County Public Schools; and Dr. Chelsea Taylor, Wicomico County Public Schools.

Selected by a panel representing principals, educators, students, and families, all finalists were evaluated on student achievement, teaching philosophy, community involvement, and knowledge of education issues.

The annual Teacher of the Year Gala was held at Valley Mansion by Martin’s in Hunt Valley. Presenting sponsors of the Maryland Teacher of the Year Program are McDonald’s Family Restaurants of Baltimore and Northrop Grumman Corporation. Platinum sponsors are Educational Systems Federal Credit Union, Maryland Public Television, and Whiting-Turner Contracting Company. Gold sponsors are Baltimore Sun Media Group, Baltimore Orioles, Maryland State Education Association, and WJZ-TV/CBS Baltimore.
